Lessons often make the biggest difference to the total. At CHF 100 per lesson, 20 lessons would cost CHF 2,000 before courses and official fees. This is a budgeting example, not a required lesson count.
Exchange Fees and Processing Times
Geneva lists CHF 150 for a foreign-license exchange outside categories C, C1 and D. Eyesight checks, translations and any control-drive preparation can add to that amount.
Processing depends on the application and canton. Card production after approval is different from the time needed to assess eligibility or arrange a test. The 12-month recognition deadline should therefore guide when you start, rather than an estimated postal delivery time.

A first category B license normally comes with a three-year probationary period. You must complete the compulsory one-day additional training within the first 12 months.

Foreign-license holders may also receive a probationary license, depending on when they first qualified and moved to Switzerland. The canton determines the applicable conditions.

An ordinary definitive Swiss driving license generally has no expiry date. However, medical fitness requirements and category-specific conditions can still apply.
You need a replacement when the document is lost, stolen, or requires updated personal information. Old blue paper licenses ceased to be valid on 1 November 2024.
Digital learner permits are also available through participating cantons. They offer another document format; they do not remove the theory test, practice requirements, or practical assessment. Check your canton’s instructions rather than assuming a photograph of your permit is an accepted substitute.

A valid Swiss driving license gives you permission to drive the relevant vehicle category. The vehicle itself still needs appropriate registration and compulsory liability insurance.
